Quick verdict

Salla is the easiest start for most new Saudi-only stores. Zid suits growing stores that want strong operations tools and a free starting plan. Shopify is the better choice if you sell internationally or need advanced design and apps — but in Saudi Arabia you will need a third-party payment gateway, because Shopify Payments is not available there.

If you are opening an online store in Saudi Arabia, three platforms come up in almost every conversation: the two local leaders, Salla and Zid, and the global giant, Shopify. All three can run a successful store. The right one depends on who you sell to, how much control you need, and how fast you plan to grow. This guide compares them on the things that actually matter to Saudi merchants.

Prices and features were checked in October 2026. Platforms change their plans often — always confirm on the official pricing pages before you decide.

Salla: the easiest start for Saudi merchants

Salla was built for the Saudi market, and it shows. The dashboard is Arabic-first, local payment methods and shipping companies are integrated, and a merchant can launch a working store in days without technical help.

  • Strengths: very fast setup, Arabic-first experience, local payments and shipping out of the box, large community of Saudi merchants and designers.
  • Limitations: less design freedom than a fully custom store, and fewer advanced apps than Shopify. Stores can start to look similar unless you invest in a custom theme.
  • Choose Salla if: you sell mainly inside Saudi Arabia and want to launch quickly with minimal technical work.

Zid: built for growing operations

Zid is the other Saudi leader. Its official pricing page lists a free Starter plan, paid plans from SAR 99/month, unlimited products and orders on all plans, and access to its Mazeed marketplace. Merchants often choose Zid for its operations and logistics tools.

  • Strengths: free starting plan, bilingual dashboard, local payments and logistics, strong order-management tools.
  • Limitations: like Salla, less design freedom than Shopify or a custom build, and a smaller app ecosystem.
  • Choose Zid if: you expect order volume to grow and want logistics and operations features from a Saudi platform.

Shopify: maximum flexibility and global reach

Shopify is the world’s best-known e-commerce platform, with thousands of themes and apps and excellent tools for selling across countries and currencies. The catch for Saudi merchants is payments: Shopify Payments is not available in Saudi Arabia, so you connect a third-party gateway (providers such as Tap Payments, Moyasar, HyperPay, PayTabs or Checkout.com) to accept mada, cards, Apple Pay and buy-now-pay-later.

  • Strengths: best design flexibility, huge app ecosystem, strong international selling, easy to grow into a large brand.
  • Limitations: local payments, shipping and e-invoicing rely on third-party apps; total monthly cost can be higher once apps are added; the admin is mostly English.
  • Choose Shopify if: you sell to customers outside Saudi Arabia, want a highly customised brand experience, or plan to scale significantly.

Costs beyond the subscription

The monthly plan is only part of the cost. When you compare platforms, add up:

  • Payment fees — a percentage per transaction, which varies by provider and payment method.
  • Apps — reviews, loyalty, upsells, e-invoicing or shipping apps, especially on Shopify.
  • Theme and design — a premium or custom theme makes your store stand out.
  • E-invoicing — your invoices must meet ZATCA’s e-invoicing (Fatoora) requirements. Salla and Zid provide invoicing tools; on Shopify you will typically use a compliant third-party app. Confirm what is included in your plan.
  • VAT — prices to Saudi customers include 15% VAT once you are VAT-registered.

Which should you choose?

Your situationOur pick
First online store, selling in Saudi Arabia, small budgetSalla or Zid
Want to start free and growZid
Fashion, beauty or lifestyle brand selling across the GCC and beyondShopify
Complex catalogue, B2B pricing, custom workflowsShopify or a custom build
Already successful on Salla or Zid, need a unique brand experienceCustom theme on your current platform first; migrate only if you hit real limits

Can you switch later?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be exported and imported between platforms, and your domain stays yours. Migrations take planning — URLs, redirects for SEO, payment and shipping setup — but they are routine. Starting on the “wrong” platform is rarely fatal; starting without a clear plan for growth is the bigger risk.

How we can help

We design and build stores on Salla, Zid and Shopify, as well as custom e-commerce, with Arabic-first design, local payments and SEO for Saudi searches. Online stores start from USD 1,500 (about SAR 5,625), fixed price. See our e-commerce services, our Jeddah and Riyadh pages, or request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, Salla or Zid?

Their entry paid plans are similar (around SAR 99/month), and Zid also offers a free Starter plan. The real difference is in the features you need and in transaction and app costs, so compare total monthly cost for your expected order volume.

Can I accept mada payments on Shopify in Saudi Arabia?

Yes, through a third-party payment gateway that supports mada. Shopify Payments itself is not available in Saudi Arabia.

Which platform is best for SEO?

All three can rank well. What matters more is your content, product descriptions in Arabic and English, site speed and a clean URL structure.
